[2015.07.05] Bridgeway Church - John Kim 목사
It is my honour and privilege to come and share the word of God at Milal Church today. A few years ago Rev. No and I both agreed to do pulpit exchange in order to foster unity and love between the two churches. Although this is only the second pulpit exchange, I feel very blessed to serve and worship with Milal Church. Milal Church means so much to us. And, our church values the opportunity to hear Rev. No share the Word with us.
A couple of years ago, Milal shifted the 10:30 English Department service to a 12:30 service due to serious parking concerns. At that time, we sent our teacher volunteers as well as our own children to Milal for Christian education. The time change was going to affect us in many ways. After much prayer, Bridgeway had much peace and strongly believed that God was using this as an opportunity to invite us to be an intergenerational (church of all ages) church. Just as God breaks down the cultural and language barriers, we felt like God was going to break down age barriers in our church.
The worship time change made us think about worshiping with the next generation and pass on what we learned from our parents, like faithfulness, sacrifice and perseverance. We obviously had some difficulties as it was a big shift—in particular for the high school students who came to our ministry as they were so accustomed to having worship catered to their own age group. And, though we are still working through the challenges, we are learning to be a family, God’s family. The older people are learning to be passionate through the young adults, the children are learning to play with the teenagers, the young adults are finding people to mentor them, the older people are connecting younger people to jobs. Some of the younger people have said: “I never knew I could be friends with 아줌마 and 아저씨”.
It has already been 5 years since Bridgeway Church has become an independent church under the roof of Milal. I can’t thank enough all the elders and pastors who supported us and loved us through this journey. During that journey we have ordained three deacons and one elder. We are currently praying to see if there are more who are called into the ministry of deaconship and eldership.
In the past 6 years, we have had financial struggles, we have had struggles with the young people leaving the church, we have had struggles in becoming a church. But, by God’s grace and with Milal’s patience, we are now standing and feel all the foundations have been laid. We are ready to build and grow. We are eagerly looking forward to partnering with Milal, to teach, mentor and grow the children and youth and young adults. We are also coveting the support and the prayers from all the kwonsanims of Milal, as Bridgeway continues to grow in maturity. Thank you once again for your prayers and support.
